In this article, I’m going to provide a step by step procedure on how to create a verified PayPal account in Botswana and it would surprise you to know that the procedures are very straightforward and easy. Yes!, it would only take 20 minutes of your precious time.
For those of you who don’t know, PayPal is available in Botswana and Botswana happens to be one of the few lucky African countries where its possible to receive and withdraw money via PayPal in Africa.
Residents of other African countries like Nigeria, Cameroon and few others can’t receive money with PayPal but can only issue payment or send money with PayPal…but the PayPal accounts of the residents of Botswana is “UNRESTRICTED”…and this simply means if you are residing in Botswana, you can use your PayPal account with no receiving restriction for business OR for personal purpose.
In this tutorial, I will take you through everything you need to know about opening a PayPal account in Botswana and how to log in to your PayPal Botswana account for the first time.
Before delving in to the main topic, let me start by explaining what PayPal is all about for the benefit of the people who are hearing about PayPal for the first time.
What is PayPal?
PayPal is a financial institution (founded in 1998 by Max Levchin, Peter Thiel, Luke Nosek, and Ken Howery) which enables businesses and individuals to send and receive money electronically (online).
PayPal allows residents of Botswana to create an account on its website which is connected to their debit/credit card.
Once your PayPal account has been created and connected to your bank card, you can begin sending or receiving payments to and from other PayPal users worldwide.
PayPal uses a strong encryption technology which makes it secure and safer for its customers to transfer funds without disclosing their personal financial details e.g credit card numbers or bank account details.
PayPal also offers a buyer and seller protection in which, they promises to reimburse the money of PayPal users if they are defrauded and they have also put in place strict policies which makes their payment gateway unfriendly to the bad guys.

Before you can open a PayPal account in Botswana, first, you will be required to choose the type of PayPal Botswana account that you wish to create.
So many Botswanans get stocked at this first step as they are confused on what type of PayPal accounts to create.
- Difference between Personal and Business Botswana PayPal accounts?
Personal PayPal Botswana is recommended for individuals in Botswana who wish to create a PayPal Botswana account to send money, pay for products and services online and also receive money from loved ones abroad.
Business Botswana PayPal account is recommended for the Botswanan online merchants who operate under a company/group name or internet entrepreneurs in Botswana who will like to receive payments for their products and services online.
Business Botswana PayPal accounts offers additional features such as allowing up to 200 employees limited access to your accounts and since business PayPal account is popularly used for receiving payment for product and services, a transaction fee will be charged when payment is received but no transaction fee is charged when you receive money with the non business personal Botswana account.
Summarily the business PayPal accounts is often created by Botswanans who wish to do business online or cash out their earnings on the freelance marketplaces…while the personal PayPal account is a non-business PayPal account often used by residents of Botswana to receive money from loved ones abroad.

What you need in order to create a verified PayPal account in Botswana (PayPal Botswana Requirements)…
*** Prepaid Card or Debit Card to verify your PayPal Botswana account (not compulsory)
To create a verified PayPal account in Botswana, you will need a prepaid card or Debit Card, which you will use to verify your PayPal account.
For those of you who don’t know, a verified PayPal Botswana account is an account that has at least 1 prepaid card or debit card connected to it and with a card linked to your PayPal Botswana account, your PayPal account will appear credible to your customers and clients.
Apart from the credibility aspect, its important that you link a card to your PayPal account if you intend to use your PayPal account for online payments immediately/seconds after creating it.
It should be noted that when you issue payment via PayPal, money is collected from the card that is linked/connected to your PayPal account and used by PayPal to make the payment hence without a card linked to your PayPal Botswana account, you won’t be able to issue payment with your PayPal account…till somebody sends money to your PayPal account balance.
Its also note worthy that an unverified PayPal Botswana accounts (also known as virtual Botswana PayPal accounts) can’t receive more than $500 but with a verified PayPal Botswana account, you can receive and withdraw up to $10,000 (Pula equivalent) per day.
If the $500 receiving limit would be ok for you or you just wish to use your PayPal account to cash out your earnings online and use it for online payment, then you don’t need a card.
*** Valid ID/Passport
A valid Botswana ID card/Passport is an essential requirement for creating a PayPal account in Botswana.
All the credentials (personal info) used to create your PayPal Botswana account must be genuine and corresponds with the info found on your Botswana ID and passport.
Using a fake name, fake ID/Passport number, fake date of birth, will cause PayPal to place a permanent limitation on your PayPal Botswana account in no time.
PayPal is a financial institution which makes her money by acting as a middleman in business transactions ensuring that there’s no fraud and as such they are very strict to ensure that the fraudsters don’t exploit their payment gateway to defraud people of their hard-earned money…and it should be noted that when a PayPal user get’s scammed, PayPal will have to refund the money of the victim due to their buyer protection… thereby incurring loss.
Its should be noted that PayPal lose is always far greater than their profit when one of their users gets defrauded.
They charge less than $5 as transaction fee but when a PayPal user gets scammed they offer full refund which is always greater than they profit they would have made.
In a desperate attempt to reduce loss via fraud, PayPal can place a ban on your PayPal account if there’s anything that insinuates you are not a trustworthy person.
Somebody may likely want to ask, how will PayPal know that i used a fake credentials to create my PayPal Botswana account???
If you receive an amount of money that’s far greater that the usual amounts you have been receiving or somebody tries to login to your PayPal account from outside of Botswana or a device you have never used to log in to your account, PayPal will place a temporal limitation on your PayPal account and request that you confirm your identity by uploading a photo of your valid Botswana ID, Passport or driving license.
After you have submitted a photo of a valid identification document (Botswana ID, Passport or driving license) they will check the credentials associated with your PayPal account to see if it corresponds with the info on your ID.
If a permanent limitation is placed on your PayPal account due to fake credentials, you won’t be able to use PayPal anymore and no matter the amount of emails you send to their customer service pleading, they won’t reinstate your PayPal account.
So all your credentials must be valid and correspond with the info on your Botswana ID card/Passport.
Ok now that we are done with the basics, let’s proceed to the main topic.
Step by Step Procedures on how to create a PayPal account in Botswana.
1) Visit the PayPal Botswana website via this link http://www.paypal.com/bw/ and click on the blue Sign Up button found on the top left hand corner of the site.
2) Choose the type of PayPal Botswana account that you wish to create…
Like i mentioned earlier, you can either create a personal or the business PayPal Botswana account depending on your need. Irrespective of the type you choose, the procedures for creating both accounts are similar.
In this article, I’m going to create the Business Botswana PayPal account.
From the screenshot below, you can see that i have selected the Business Account.
After you have selected your preferred PayPal account, click on CONTINUE to proceed to the next step…
3) Enter an Email and Password.
In the next step you will be required to enter your email address…and any email you enter here will become the PayPal email which you will be using to receive money/payments from other PayPal users.
This would also be the email address you’ll use to log in.
After you have entered your PayPal Botswana email and password, click on continue to proceed to the next step.

4) Enter your Valid Credentials
At this step you need to fill in your credentials which include;
*** First and Last Name (should match the order found on your Botswana ID card or Passport)
*** Legal Business Name (if you don’t have a legal business name, still enter complete name or any nick name here)
It should be noted that your Legal business name is the name that will appear in the transaction history of other PayPal users when you send money or issue payment. Still wondering what name to use??? there’s no need to think too much about this as you can still change the business name. So just enter your name there if you don’t have a business name in mind.
*** Enter phone number (enter a valid phone number as you will be required to confirm phone number when you want to change your PayPal password and during PayPal security check).
*** PayPal doesn’t support Botswana Pula…so just go with the default currency; dollar (but whenever you withdraw money from your PayPal account, the dollar will be converted to the local currency and deposited in your FNB account or Botswana prepaid card).
After you have entered your valid credentials, check the USER AGREEMENT box and click on the AGREE AND CONTINUE button to proceed to the next step.
5) Describe your Business
In this step you will be required to describe the business you are running.
Is it an individual or Sole proprietorship business run by one person without any employee???
Is is a Cooperation, partnership etc
Choose the business type which suit your current business or one you intend to set up in future.
In my case, i will choose the “individual or Sole proprietorship” type.
Please don’t think too much here. Just select any of the business type and proceed.
After you have selected a business type, select a product or service category which matches the product or service you intend to sell online.
In my case, i have selected “miscellaneous personal services” from the dropdown list.

Ok after you have chosen your business type and selected your product or service category, proceed to the next step
6) Enter your Personal Info (The last step)
In this step, you just need to provide the following credentials…
***Your Date of birth…(date of birth should correspond with the date of birth on your National ID, passport, driving license).
***Enter your nationality….(PayPal will automatically fill this info for you… since you are creating a PayPal account on the PayPal Botswana website, PayPal will assume your nationality is Botswana…but if your nationality is different, you can select your nationality from the dropdown list.
*** Choose a valid identification document (National ID, Passport, Driving License) that you have and can use to verify your identity when PayPal request for identity check. In my case i have chosen the Botswana National ID option…depending on the chosen option, you also will be asked to provide your National ID number, passport number, Driving License number. From the screenshot below, you can see that i have also entered my Botswana Nationanal ID number.
*** After you have entered your personal details, check the box to confirm that your business address is same as your house address…after you have done that proceed to the next step to complete the PayPal Botswana account sign up process.

7) Confirm your PayPal Email
After you have completed the 6th step, your PayPal Botswana account would be created….but its not yet ready for you to start sending and receiving payments.
There two things you need to do, to get your PayPal account ready for business.
One of the last two things you need to do, is to confirm your PayPal email.
After completing step 6, PayPal will send you a series of emails.
Log into the email you use to create your PayPal Botswana account and you will find 3 emails sent by PayPal.
Open the email titled “confirm your email” and in the email you will find a button labelled confirm your Email.
Click on the button and enter your PayPal password to confirm your PayPal email.

8) Link a Prepaid Card or Debit card to your PayPal Botswana account to verify it
I have already explained the importance of linking a card to your PayPal Botswana account…so i will just go straight to the procedures on linking a card to a PayPal Botswana.
If you already have a card, click on view details and enter your credit card number, expiry date of card and the security code to link your credit card to your Botswana PayPal account.
After linking your card to your PayPal account, the next thing you need to do, is to CONFIRM YOUR CARD…to complete the process .
To confirm your card, you will need to enter a 4 digit PayPal code found in your card statement.

Ok after you have confirmed your PayPal email and successfully connected a card to it, your PayPal account will now be ready to send and receive money.
