On Thursday, 17 of September, 2020, a heart breaking video surfaced on the social media which shows a group of inmates in an unknown prison in the French speaking regions of Cameroon, confessing that they have spent almost 5 years in prison without a trial.

Most of the forgotten inmates (arrested in the North West region in early 2016) recounted that since they were arrested, they have never been informed about the crime they have committed or the reason why they were arrested.

After spending almost 5yrs in the tough prison (characterized by overcrowding, violence, Hunger and other conditions which pose grave risks to prisoner health and safety) the forgotten detainees decided to raise an alarm about the aforementioned issue with a hope to get help as Justice delayed is justice denied.

It should be recalled that during the onset of the Anglophone crisis, tons of people were arbitrarily arrested in the North West region, majority of whom (after 4 yrs) the government cannot establish records about where, when, how and why they were arrested and who arrested them, owing to the fact that they were randomly arrested from various areas in the two restive English Speaking regions and jumbled up in jail for minor offenses related to the Anglophone crisis

One of the forgotten inmates said he was arrested infront of the Fons palace in Wum and has spent almost 4 yrs in prison without trial for an unknown offense. Another said he was arrested in the hospital and has spent more than 4 yrs in prison for a crime he didn’t commit.

It should be noted that this this is not the first time that news has emerged on the social media about Southern Cameroonians getting arrested for unknown offenses and left to rot in Jail without trial.

In 2017, ex- Cameroonian supreme court judge; Ayah Paul Abine recounted (during an interview with Equinoxe TV) that when he was still in detention, a person was sent to interrogate him and when he asked the person why he was arrested, the person couldn’t say anything and sheepishly left the interrogation room (probably to find out why he was arrested).

As you read this post, there many English speaking Cameroonians who have spent more than 3yrs in prison still awaiting trial for unknown offenses.
