On Monday, the 15th of April, 2019, the African Union (AU) threatened to suspend Sudan following last week’s coup which saw Omar al-Bashir ousted from power by the Sudanese military.

The AU wants the Sudanese military to hand over power to Civilians or else Sudan will be suspended.

Yesterday Monday, the 15th of April, the AU’s Peace and Security Council (AU’s PSC) said (in a statement) that if the military led junta fails to hand power to civilians within 15 days, the AU will suspend “the participation of Sudan in all AU’s activities until the restoration of constitutional order,”

The body, which has 55 member states, added that “a military-led transition would be completely contrary to the aspirations of the people of Sudan.”

As a reminder, after the military coup,  Sudanese military leader  and minister of Defense; Lt. General Awad Ibn Auf;  who masterminded the coup, announced a series of measures which will be taken by the Sudanese Military.

He said that the Constitution of Sudan will be suspended, a 3 months state of Emergency will be imposed, the National Assembly of Sudan will be dissolved, President Omar Al Bashir will be arrested and a military-led transitional government will be formed, which will rule Sudan for two years.

However, protest leaders said they will not leave the streets until the military hands over power to a civilian government.

Sudanese military leader  and minister of Defense; Lt. General Awad Ibn Auf;  who masterminded the coup, later resigned after the Sudanese protesters didn’t buy the idea of 2 years military rule.

He was succeeded by Lt-Gen Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman Burhan.

The new Sudanese Military leader;Lt-Gen Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman Burhan is said to have met with protesters to hear their views.

Bashir ruled Sudan with an iron fist for 30 years before he was deposed last week following mass protests that have rocked the country since December, 2018.

The protesters have remained in the streets, demanding a return to civilian rule from the military council that’s replaced, Bashir.

On Monday, the AU echoed the protesters’ demands, calling the military intervention a “coup d’Etat, which (the AU’s PSC) strongly condemns.”

Our ears are still on the ground. We shall provide you with more information as the story unfolds.
